Abstract
Clay brick has been used in The Netherlands ever since the end of the twelveth century. Tooling the laying mortar was the normal method offinishing masonry up to about 1750. Toen, maybe in an attempt to minimize the need ofrepair in an early stage, pointing was developed. Apparently, the new technique was successful since pointing became the only method of finishing masonry in The Netherlands after about 1850. Of course, both techniques have their benefits and backdraws. See table 1.
