Abstract
Having a good understanding of the physical phenomena governing the performance of CBRN protective equipment is the first step in optimizing existing or designing new equipment. Numerical simulations were conducted of the flow and mass transfer in a simplified model of permeable CBRN protective clothing material. On the basis of a comparison with a semi-empirical model implications to future simulations were formulated in order to improve the validity of the numerical model. It appeared the grid needed refinement in the narrowest passage to handle steep gradients. The adsorption on the particle wall is to be improved for a better prediction of the 50% breakthrough time and the initial breakthrough concentration. Finally, the distribution of particle sizes needs to be poly-disperse.
