Abstract
The feasibility of the inspection of flow line hubs using the phased array technique was investigated to determine the surface area of the seal area degraded by corrosion. A clean model of the hub was simulated to gain insight into the geometrical echoes and to determine the area covered by the ultrasonic beams. A finite difference scheme was used to simulate the phased array inspection technique and simulations were carried out using the model without corrosion. The spatial variations of the corroded areas are merely schematic depictions of actual corrosion profiles. For various frequencies, an enlarged corroded surface area leads to additional echoes between the two geometrical corner echoes, suggesting that each corrosion level is directly linked to a certain range of angles at which scattered ultrasonic energy is received. It is concluded that corrosion could be monitored by means of one single phased array probe by sweeping the beam from 32 up to 60°.
