Abstract
An extensive performance evaluation is presented for a segregated and a hybrid radio resource sharing scheme in an integrated GSM/GPRS network, with a finite queue for data calls that cannot be served immediately upon arrival. Markov chain analysis is used to derive simple performance measures such as the blocking probabilities, expected channel utilization, and expected sojourn times. As a main result, a closed-form expression is derived for the expected sojourn time of a data call, conditional on its size, indicating that the sojourn time is proportional to the call size. Additionally, as a valuable intermediate result, the expected conditional sojourn time of a newly arriving data call finding the system in a given state is obtained, which can be fed back to the source as an indication of the expected transmission delay. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the performance of the radio resource sharing schemes.
