Abstract
Earth observation satellites: datastream and data interpretation. A short and very general description is given of the earth observation (remote sensing) satellites now in use (or used) for the three windows in the atmosphere, as LANDSAT, the HCMM, and SEASAT. Their development is detemined to a high degree by the experiences obtained in aerial photography and photo-interpretation. Therefore the approach has been an empirical one predominantly ln this field. The fact that the physics behind the image is often not well understood, in particular in the new windows (the thermal ínfrared and the microwaves), has hampered their implenentation.
