Abstract
durable material which withstands the test of time well. This also applies to concrete which encases steel in the shape of reinforcing steel or prestressing steel. That this is not a matter of course has been recognised from the moment that concrete started to be used. In particular, the risk of corrosion of the reinforcement was given atten-tion in the design phase and led to requirements being made on the concrete cover of the reinforcement. Apart from this the durability was scarcely a serious design aspect. This led to a certain nonchalance in practice on the part of designers and constructors alike.
