Abstract
The EU chemical industry faces multiple challenges with respect to its competitive position. Though EU chemical sales almost doubled during the last two decades, its global market share has been almost cut in half. Meanwhile, the industry is expected to become more sustainable and reduce its CO2 emissions. A drastic improvement in energy and feedstock efficiency and far-reaching decarbonisation are required to sustain the chemical industries' license to operate in a future fossil-lean and carbon constrained world. Electrification offers promising opportunities to significantly reduce the CO2 footprint of the chemical industry and improve its competitiveness.
