Abstract
This paper reviews recent developments in the field of noise research. In our society the sources of noise pollution are increasing, as is annoyance. In research, specific attention has been paid to noise originating from motor vehicles and other surface transport, and also from aircraft, especially military aircraft and helicopters. As yet, the issue of the existence of one universal, single, dose-response relationship has remained unsolved, although some new nuances have been added. Changes in annoyance resulting from changes in noise levels are unlikely to be predicted from dose-response relationships established in 'steady state' situations. Some progress has been made in developing models to predict noise annoyance from a combination of sources. It will be necessary to develop and test a theoretical framework for annoyance and its correlations, and to explore the relationship between annoyance and stress theories.
