Abstract
A concise overview is given of Roman use of local and imported dimension stones in the Netherlands. Local stones include Cretaceous Maastricht and Kunrade limestone from the south of the Dutch province of Limburg, Carboniferous sandstone from the Limburg-Aachen-Liège area and Miocene Nivelstein sandstone from Herzogenrath, just east of the present-day border. Imported Roman dimension stones notably are Rtimer tuff from the Eifel, basalts s.l. from the Siebengebirge and Eifel, Germany and limestones from the Lorraine, France. More rarely, Buntsandstein sandstone from the southern Eifel and sandstones of yet undetermined provenance (possible from the Palatinate) and Carboniferous limestone from Belgium are encountered.
