Abstract
Introduction: Changes in our food production system, our diets and a decrease in daily habitual physical activity contribute to an increasing number of individuals with diabetes mellitus type 2 (DMT2). Until recently, treatment primarily consisted of administering medication but nowadays a growing body of evidence shows the added value of lifestyle interventions as an alternative treatment of DMT2. Up to now, these type of interventions have mostly been applied in general practitioner care. This paper describes the rationale and design of a feasibility study to implement a lifestyle intervention in the work context, among shift workers with DMT2 specifically. Methods and analysis: A participatory approach, in which literature was combined with qualitative input from all stakeholders, is applied to adapt an existing lifestyle intervention to shift workers with DMT2. The personalized intervention P4@Work will last 13 weeks and consists of identification of the subtyping of DMT2, followed by four counseling sessions with the company doctor, six counseling sessions by a dietician and if appropriate, physical training under supervision every week. The feasibility study will be evaluated within the RE-AIM framework. To assess reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation and maintenance of the intervention, a mixed methods approach that uses both quantitative and qualitative data will be applied. Data will be gathered on the level of target group (i.e., workers with DMT2 participating in the intervention) as well as of professionals (i.e., the company doctor, dietician and physiotherapist). Ethics and dissemination: The Medical Research Ethics Committee Brabant approved the protocol of the study (ABR Number 70758). The findings will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications and (inter)national conference presentations.
