Abstract
The European Enhanced Vehicle-Safety Committee (EEVC) established Working Group 14 (WG14) with the task to develop a test procedure and performance standard for energy-absorbing front underrun protection systems for trucks in order to reduce the injuries to car occupants in frontal collisions between passenger cars and trucks. WG14 defined a representative accident type, based on statistics analysis of European accident data involving car-to-truck frontal collisions. The influence of 'rigid' front underrun protection was estimated and the benefit of energy-absorbing systems was determined. The paper presents these activities. It appears that in the European Union yearly at least 250 car occupants would not be killed in car-to-truck frontal collisions if trucks would be equipped with energy-absorbing front underrun protection systems instead of rigid devices.
