Abstract
From August 24-29, 2003 in Seoul, Korea the XVth Triennial Congress of the International Ergonomics Association and the 7th Joint Conference of Ergonomics Society of Korea / Japan Ergonomics Society were held. The central theme was "Ergonomics in the digital age". The subject of this paper is seat appearance and sitting comfort. In the present study 15 contemporary office seats were evaluated. Therefore, in 79 subjects their emotional response at first sight, their rating on a scale from ugly to beautiful (at sight), and their feelings of discomfort and comfort during sitting, were measured. All four variables appeared to discriminate among the various chairs to a similar extent. A small but significant correlation (0.34) was found between the ugly-beautiful rating and the feeling of comfort.
