Abstract
A system for classifying genotoxic carcinogens according to their estimated risk for humans in the occupational situation has been worked out. Three classes were defined qualifying carcinogens of low, intermediate and high potency, respectively. The developed system is based on the TD 50 - value combined with weighing factors, finally resulting in a potency index expressed as estimated tumor incidence in humans at 1 mg/m3 under occupational conditions of exposure (8 hours/day, 5 days/week for 40 years). The proposed system enables the use of animal and human data for ranking of carcinogens to their estimated risk in a person.
