Abstract
Masonry consists of brick and mortar. Next to the laying mortar there can be a separate pointing mortar as well. Each of these components can suffer damage. Such damages, of course, have to do with the properties of the components and with the agressiveness of the environment. However, next to their composition, the properties of a mortar appear a function of those of the bricks it hardened between and the agressiveness of the environment can be affected by the properties of the brick. Quite some damages are due to some interaction between mortar and brick. This paper deals with clay brick masonry in particular.
