Abstract
Continuous treatment application and changeover designs are both practised in milk production research. Continuous treatment trials require large numbers of animals to achieve sufficient precision due to the large variability between dairy cows. Changeover trials are relatively more precise, but result in biased estimates if certain assumptions do not hold. These assumptions are set out. The advantages and disadvantages of both types of design are considered to provide a guideline for choice between the two types of experiment in relation to the treatments under consideration. © 1987.
