Abstract
Greenhouse gas emissions are highly variable in space and time. This variability hampers measurements of greenhouse gas emissions and hinders the use of land use and management as mitigation options. We give an overview of explaining factors of temporal and spatial variability of greenhouse gas emissions from Dutch landscapes. CO2 fluxes have a regular annual temporal variability. Temporal variability of N2O emission is characterized by low background emissions and high peaks that are related to precipitation and manure application, while temporal variability of CH fluxes is very irregular. Spatial variability of CO2 can be explained using the crop type in agricultural land or the tree species in forests. Spatial variability of N2O and CH is strongly influenced by groundwater and management intensity. Additionally, at the landscape scale there is a significant greenhouse gas emission from ditches and open water. The temporal variability has to be considered in the design of measurement campaigns, while the insight in factors explaining the spatial variability of greenhouse gas emissions can help to improve landscape scale estimates of greenhouse gas emissions and guide management decisions for mitigation.
