Abstract
accumulations of natural gases in onshore and offshore Netherlands. The possible origin of the nitrogen in the gas accumulations in North Western Europe has been subject of extensive studies for more than 10 years (Gerling et al. 1997; Krooss et al. 1995, 2005, 2006; Littke et al. 1995; Mingram et al. 2003, 2005). However, the sources of the nitrogen and the migration and accumulation processes are still not very well understood (e.g. Krooss et al. 2006). The TNO in-house gas database contains the analyses of approximately 1400 gas samples from the Netherlands (publicly available at www.nlog.nl the gas database includes values of the isotopic composition of nitrogen (15N) for 78 analyses of gas samples. This paper provides data on the isotopic composition of nitrogen in natural gases of offshore and onshore Netherlands and proposes a process-based interpretation of the observed regional variation in isotopic characteristics. It shows that differences in isotopic signature can be related to regional differences in timing of nitrogen generation and accumulation
