Abstract
Within the EU FP7 QUIESST project, QUIeting the Environment for a Sustainable Surface Transport, a test method is being developed for the reflectivity of noise barriers. The method needs to account for a complex shape of barriers and the use of various types of absorbing materials. The performance of a barrier is to be measured in the near field, whereas the far field effects will be used to define an appropriate indicator for the rating of the noise barrier reflection characteristics. In this QUIESST work package, numerical simulations in the time and frequency domain have been used to obtain information about near and far field effects of several barrier types and materials. It is presented that from a database of simulated far field reflection effects from a set of combinations of barrier design and material, an engineering method is developed. With geometric information and material parameters as an input, this engineering formula can be used to calculate the single number rating of sound reflection DL---- in the far field. Furthermore, a far field performance indicator is proposed, given a rating of the reflectivity of the noise barrier in an environment with low-rise buildings or with high-rise buildings. © European Acoustics Association.
